Wessel Van Wyk &

The Florida High School

He will be playing a selection of timeless piano works from his newly released CD, “Wessel van Wyk Piano Favourites Volume 4” (KLA4CD 04). His choice of repertoire guarantees a fascinating music journey of varied moods.

To satisfy romantic tastes there will be his gentle renditions of evergreen melodies such as Liszt’s Gondoliera (the Girl in the Gondola), Chopin’s Op. 9 no. 2 Nocturne, Tchaikovsky’s Romance Op. 2, as well as a solo version of Rachmaninoff’s evergreen 18th Variation from the Paganini Rhapsody. As a contrast to the dreamy works Van Wyk will be exhibiting some fiery pianism in more virtuoso works such as Rossini/Liszt’s Regata di Veneziana, Chopin’s Grande Valse Brillante Op.18, Lecuona’s Malaguena and De Falla’s Ritual Fire Dance.

Petersburg Quartet

The Petersburg Quartet, an award-winning Russian vocal ensemble, will visit South Africa for a five-city tour in late 2010, with performances in several cities including Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Bloemfontein, Stellenbosch and Nelspruit. The tour, the quartet’s first to Africa, runs from September 28 to October 20.

The group is being brought to South Africa by local businessman Andre du Toit, who was deeply impressed with the quartet after seeing them perform at the Nikolaevsky Palace in St Petersburg. “Their music touched me to the depths of my soul,” he says. “My wife and I were so inspired by them we decided we had to share this discovery. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to travel to Russia, but we can bring a bit of Russia to South Africa.” Founded 15 years ago, the Petersburg Quartet still has all four original members: Igor Krushelnitsky (bass), Pawel Napalkov (baritone), Arseny Garibjan (2nd tenor) and Anatoly Lomunov (1st tenor).

The four met at the famous Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg State Conservatory, and have since created a unique style which fuses their roots in Russian folk and church choral music with jazz and spiritual music from around the world.  “Students from all over the world come to St Petersburg to study music,” explains conductor Igor Krushelnitsky. “We have accumulated the music of many cultures here - and those students have taken the music of Russia back with them in their turn.

There is a Russian musician in every orchestra.” The Petersburg Quartet’s musical repertoire includes classical and chamber music, jazz and gospel music, as well as folk songs from Russia, Germany, France and the rest of Europe. The group sings both a cappella and with accompaniment, depending on the nature of the performance venue.  For its South African tour, Krushelnitsky says the quartet will focus on “music that will make people think and feel. No matter where people come from, music can make us feel with one soul and one heart.”

The Basement

Nazli George

Side-Kick

Fans of the supper theatre format will be pleased to know that it’s back - with a kick!

Nazli George’s Side-Kick is a satirical musical comedy that holds a magnifying glass to South Africa during that insane period of our history known as the Soccer World Cup. Whether or not you were a fan, the World Cup unbalanced the national psyche, and magnified our peculiarly South African characteristics.

It brought out the best in some of us, and the worst in others! In zany burlesque style, the show touches on topical or controversial issues such as the national football team, downtown Jo’burg and Julius Malema - but with its tongue firmly in cheek all the way.

This crazy affair is fronted by its writer, Nazli George, who’s joined on stage by The Musketeers, a talented duo of all-acting, all-singing hoofers (who, in their spare time, are known as Alvin Mauritz and Ashwill Petersen).

Date : 10 September 2010 @ 18:00

Tickets : R 200

               : R 150 (Students, Group bookings & Pensioners)
